Sam Allardyce has indicated that he is going to ask every player at Everton if they want to leave Goodison. In this article, The Street End takes a look at the players who may leave Goodison, in the near future.
The Revolving Door
This first group of players are likely to go through a revolving door at Everton. They have not been with the club for longer than 2 years and are likely to leave in the window.
Davey Klaassen is an obvious candidate to leave Everton in the January transfer window. Since the arrival of Sam Allardyce, he has only appeared once and has even been a substitute in the league. With the amount of games likely to diminish after Christmas, the Dutchman is likely to find himself frozen out. A loan move abroad is likely for the former Ajax Captain.
Sandro Ramirez is another of Koeman’s signings who has failed to settle in. Since appearing as a substitute against Palace, the Spaniard has disappeared from the matchday squad. Ramirez game involves dropping deep into holes rather than the traditional number 9. He is a victim of Koeman’s wretched recruitment. A transfer or loan back to Spain is likely at this moment for the former Malaga man.
Maarten Stekelenburg has not been seen since Koeman left, with Joel Robles preferred to the former Dutch number 1. He made 19 appearances last season and was on the bench until Koeman was fired. At 35, Stekelenburg is likely to look for one last contract starting somewhere.
Morgan Schneiderlin is another of Koeman’s signings who may not stay with Everton. Genuine excitement accompanied the arrival of the Frenchman and initially, he didn’t disappoint. The former United man provided an assured presence in midfield which led to Gareth Barry’s departure in the summer. His presence was sorely missed later in the season due to injuries.
He was expected to become a key component of a top 6 challenge this season. Instead, the Frenchman has looked lethargic and disinterested. Ill-disciplined performances have led to red cards against City and Lyon. The incident with Mirallas has cast further doubt on the Frenchman’s future. Schneiderlin is talented but it remains to be seen if he has the guts to play for Everton.
The Malcontent
Kevin Mirallas is another who is likely to leave in January. Enough has been written about Mirallas in these pages but click here for a detailed examination of his Everton career.
Are You Still Here?
Another victim of Everton’s managerial turnover s Shani Tarashaj. Roberto Martinez signed the Swiss Schemer in his final season with the Toffees. Unfortunately for him, Koeman has never fancied him and he has suffered with fitness issues which impaired his progress. Still only 22, the Swiss international will be hoping to appear in next year’s world cup and will try to leave in January. Like Oumar Niasse, he is another victim of Koeman’s ruthless managerial style.
Luke Garbutt has also suffered similair treatment by Koeman this season. Despite only having Leighton Baines as a specialist left back, Koeman left out the 24 year old, with Cuco Martina currently playing out of position. He was a punt at a time when we lacked money under Moyes who saw some potential. Garbutt was expected to leave last summer after failing to impress in a number of loan spells. The Leeds lad could have found playing time after Leighton Baines recent injury. Unfortunately, he was not registered in any competition. Nice one Ronald!
The Injury Prone Player
Mo Besic is another Martinez signing who has not established himself. Popular with some Evertonians because of his aggression, the Bosnian barely makes the bench for Everton these days. Â Besic has not developed due to an unfortunate run with injuries. With Davies, Gana, Schneiderlin, McCarthy and Baningime ahead of him, a transfer looks likely for Mo.
The 6 Month Club
Both Joel Robles and Ross Barkley have 6 months left on their contracts and could leave Everton in January. Barkley would be a huge loss to Everton. Off field pressures and his relationship with the previous manager have left the lifelong blue looking away from Goodison. The appointment of Sam Allardyce is not a flashy one and Barkley may be thinking of earning medals by leaving Everton.
Barkley has suffered from the mismanagement of Koeman and Roy Hodgson at England which shattered his confidence. Everton have to decide whether risk to keeping him and ride the wave of him trying to get in the England squad and hoping he decides to stay. If he decides to leave, the club would get nothing for him. The alternative is that he leaves for a cut price in January, way below his value and helps a rival cement their champion’s league place.
Joel Robles is good enough to start in the Premier League but has no chance of dislodging Pickford as number 1. He may look to return to his native Spain in January and start his career from there. Robles has been a good teammate at Everton and has the potential to be a good keeper if he cuts out the mistakes. Everton will have to decide whether to cash in in January and look for a replacement.
